Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify how thermal and chemical exposures on the fireground can have an impact on your health as a firefighter.
  • Relate tactical choices and considerations on the fireground to possible cardiovascular and chemical exposure risks.
  • Explain how firefighting operations may impact potential trapped occupant exposure and survivability.
  • Recognize how firefighting assignments and activities on the fireground can influence physiological responses.
  • Identify methods to reduce exposure by using evidence-based techniques and decontamination methods on turnout gear and skin.

Prerequisites

A working knowledge of the thermal and chemical exposures associated with firefighting activities as well as how these exposures may contribute to firefighters' increased risk for cardiovascular events and certain types of cancers is needed to understand the content presented in this course. We encourage you to take the Foundations: Thermal and Chemical Exposures in the Fire Service lesson before completing this course.
